What is Self Determination Theory?

Seven Dimensions
Updated Apr 16, 2020

Kylie Bell explains Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to Eve Ash. Its three ingredients (nutriments) are relationships, competency and autonomy. This program is designed to help managers and team leaders understand what motivates their people and how to create a motivated team. The program is packed with useful strategies and insights.

Kylie Bell discusses how Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is an insufficient assessment of what motivates people for organizational purposes. Edward Deci and Richard Ryan worked out that humans have three psychological needs that require being met at the same time: relationships, competency and autonomy. These three needs, called nutriments, when working well lead to people cooperating better, improving their ability to solve problems, feeling more free, creative and more motivated.

This program is one of the Insights and Strategies Series, featuring psychologist Eve Ash interviewing a range of experts and business leaders who share their experiences and practical strategies for achieving best practice.
