Course Overview

This course explains how the cardiac conduction works and how to interpret electrocardiograms. It explains electrochemical processes that make the heart contract and how the cardiac conduction system initiates and controls the heartbeat. It explains how heart monitors and electrocardiograms can be used to monitor and recognise changes in the heart rate and rhythm and identify cardiac abnormalities.

This is part 3 in a 3 part course on cardiology:

  1. Cardiology - Anatomy of the heart
  2. Cardiology - Cardiac assessment
  3. Cardiology - The conduction system and electrocardiograms

This module assumes that modules 1 and 2 of the course have been completed.

This course has been written by healthcare content experts and has been peer reviewed.

Target Audience

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will:

  1. Understand two distinct properties of the heart: electrical and mechanical function.
  2. Know how the muscle of the heart contracts.
  3. Understand how electrical activity is generated in and travels through the heart.
  4. Describe the steps of the action potential.
  5. Identify the components of the cardiac conduction system.
  6. Understand how technology is used to monitor the rate and rhythm of the heart.

Business Outcomes

A comprehensive learning package, this course meets the requirements of the theoretical component of a competency based course.
