Course Introduction

A recent report on Growth Entrepreneurship indicates that entrepreneurship and setting up of new businesses have recovered from the recession slump. Data from the annual survey shows that young businesses are having a positive impact on job growth and productivity. Linda Rottenberg, who has been named one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News and is the CEO and co-founder of Endeavor, a nonprofit organization working to advance entrepreneurship, discusses some of the most important topics of interest to new small business owners. She also shares suggestions for those thinking about becoming entrepreneurs.

In this course you will learn how the meaning of entrepreneurship has changed over the years. Rottenberg describes entrepreneurs in terms of species—from gazelles who develop the fastest growing companies to the butterflies, and dolphins and skunks who bring their entrepreneurial talents to corporations. She gives advice on getting started with your new business and discusses the importance of mitigating risk, sustaining your “Day One” passion, and managing chaos and failure that are an entrepreneurs friend because they foster innovation. She suggests every entrepreneur start their business with a formalized written contract or “prenup” and discusses a style of leadership that allows vulnerability.
