The minimisation of restrictive practices and the rights of all people to live in a restraint-free environment are essential elements of care under the Aged Care Quality Standards. The misuse of chemical and physical restraint is high on the priority of the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission and will be specifically addressed during visits by the Commission’s staff. From July 1st all Commonwealth subsidised residential aged care homes must collect and report on the Use of Physical Restraint as one of three clinical quality indicators. This topic explores the past over-use of restrictive practices and highlights alternative and practical strategies to support people with actions and responses that pose a risk to their safety or the safety of others.
