An IPO (initial public offering) is the first sale of stock by a corporation to the general public, although some of the stock for sale may be reserved for special types of buyer, such as employees. It can be a long process involving many stages and be very costly for a company. We discuss the IPO process and its associated costs. Finally, we explore the competing methods of raising funds through the issue of shares.
