Updated Feb 26, 2020

This is module 3 of a nine-part series looking at dementia. In this module, we look at the effects of dementia on families and caregivers. Dementia is also viewed through the lens of the social model of disability to understand how society can enable or disable a person living with dementia. Most importantly, we explore how person-centred dementia care will be enacted and expressed in practical care.

This course has been mapped to the Aged Care Quality Standards 1, 2, 3, and 7.

In this course the following areas will be covered:

  • the impacts of dementia

  • the social model of dementia

  • person-centred dementia care.

Business Outcomes

Having insight into how the symptoms of dementia affect families and caregivers will enable care staff to recognise the signs of carer-fatigue, enabling them to refer caregivers to support agencies and avoid burnout. Insight into the nature of challenges confronting the person with dementia, can enable care staff to identify strategies for overcoming barriers to participation in life’s activities, empowering clients to live well with dementia. Providing person-centred care is foundational to good quality care, and developing strategies for knowing and understanding the individual will enable care staff to tailor care in ways that minimise triggers and maximise personal strengths.
