Course Description

This Substance Misuse course shows you how drugs work on the human mind, describing many different types of addictive substances, from alcohol and new psychoactive substances, right up to Class A drugs.

We explore how their use affects people and their families, how to recognise addiction, and and how substance abusers can be helped to recover.

In this course you will learn:

  • About several types of drugs, including new psychoactive substances
  • The categories that different substances fall into, and what the law is on possession and supply in relation to drugs
  • The ways in which drugs are taken and how they affect the human body and mind
  • What dependency, tolerance and overdose look like
  • What addiction entails and how to recognise the signs that someone may be addicted
  • How drug misuse can affect families
  • Best practice to help substance abusers, and
  • About treatments for addiction

This course is generic and intended for everyone working with people in the areas of health and social care and beyond. It is also full of useful information for families and individuals who suspect that someone they know may need help with drug or alcohol problems.
