Historical evidence tells us that economies typically go through periods of growth and decline. These are known as business cycles and are usually identified by changes in the direction of economic activity. Peaks occur when an expansionary period ends and a recession begins, and troughs occur when a recession ends and an expansion begins. Let's look at each phase of the business cycle in more detail.
